THE FUTURE IS FIBRE!

The Copper Network is reaching the end of its life, and the switch off will begin in 2025.

IT’S HAPPENING IN PHASES
The transition will happen gradually, zone by zone, across the island.

2029 MARKS THE FINISH LINE
While it may seem far away, it’s closer than you think! Together, we’ll ensure everyone is ready for the switch to fibre.

Manx Telecom Networks is embarking on a significant transformation of the Isle of Man's telecom infrastructure, announcing that it will phase out the copper network by 2029, starting in 2025. This bold move is part of a £50 million investment to replace outdated copper infrastructure with state-of-the-art fibre optic broadband, one of the largest private infrastructure projects in the island’s history.

BY 2029, THE ISLE OF MAN WILL BE ONE OF THE ONLY FULLY FIBRE-CONNECTED NATIONS IN THE WORLD.

Manx Telecom is working closely with the Isle of Man’s CURA (Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority), the Department for Enterprise (DfE), the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and other service providers to ensure a smooth and efficient transition. This ambitious project represents a significant overhaul of the island's infrastructure, providing the foundation for the digital opportunities of tomorrow.

The shift to fibre is already well underway, with over 90% of homes and businesses able to access faster, more reliable internet. 23,000 homes are already experiencing the benefits of fibre, and this number will continue to grow as the transition progresses.

WHEN WILL THIS HAPPEN?

The switch-off of the copper network will begin in 2025, starting in Zones 1 and 2. Zones are based on which towns and villages are served by exchanges. Each zone will have 12 months’ notice to make the necessary changes with their provider. Your current provider will contact you to inform you of your switch-off date.

Dates for each zone will be announced gradually as the programme progresses, with the entire copper network being switched off by 2029.

Please note: Due to geographical factors, some properties on the same street, may be served by different exchanges which could affect their switch-off timelines. You’ll receive direct updates from your provider if your area is impacted.

300,000 KM PER SECOND

FIBRE OPTIC CABLES CAN TRANSMIT DATA AT SPEEDS OF UP TO 300,000 KM PER SECOND. That’s about 5 million times faster than a TT bike at full throttle on the Mountain Course

THIS ISN’T JUST ABOUT FASTER INTERNET; IT’S ABOUT CREATING NEW OPPORTUNITIES AND ENSURING THAT WE STAY CONNECTED FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.

1.5 MILLION METRES...

...OF FIBRE HAS BEEN LAID AS PART OF THE PROGRAMME. THAT WOULD CIRCLE THE ISLE OF MAN APPROXIMATELY 9.4 TIMES. Or all the way from Douglas to Reykjavik if laid in a straight line!

WHY CHANGE FROM COPPER TO FIBRE?

The Isle of Man’s copper network has kept us connected for over a century, from early landline calls to the first dial-up internet.

But just as our island has evolved, so must our communications. Copper can no longer keep up with the speed and reliability needed in today’s world.

Some parts of the copper network are reaching their “end of life” – meaning they’re outdated, and it’s getting harder to find replacement parts. Continuing to rely on copper would mean more frequent issues and interruptions, which is why we’re starting the process to phase it out to future proof our island.

In 2018 Manx Telecom Networks started the roll out of the fibre network and the National Broadband Plan. 1.5 million meters of Fibre has now been rolled out reaching 90% of the Island.

We’ll begin phasing out the copper network in January 2025, and over the coming years, we’ll gradually switch off copper in different parts of the island.

UP TO 85% LESS POWER...

FIBRE NETWORKS ARE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY THAN COPPER, USING UP TO 85% LESS POWER TO SEND DATA... Transitioning to fibre could reduce energy consumption enough to offset the carbon footprint of over 1000 homes annually, making it a greener choice for our island’s future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my current TV or broadband services work with fibre?

Yes, your TV and broadband services will work perfectly with fibre. In fact, fibre offers much faster speeds and better reliability for streaming, gaming, and using multiple devices at once. Your service provider will assist you in setting everything up, so you won’t lose access to any services.

I haven’t got access to fibre yet, what do I do?

Don’t worry—your copper service won’t be withdrawn until fibre is available to you. We’re working hard to expand the fibre network as quickly as possible. If fibre hasn’t reached you yet, there’s usually a specific reason, such as the feasibility of installing fibre infrastructure like poles that may require planning permissions or other interventions. The copper decommissioning programme has been carefully planned and staggered to ensure that everyone has access to fibre before copper services are fully withdrawn. Rest assured, we’ll keep you informed every step of the way.

I don’t use the internet a lot. Why do I need fibre?

Even if you don’t use the internet much now, it’s important to remember that the world is changing. More and more essential services, like healthcare, government services, and banking, are moving online. Fibre will ensure you stay connected and have access to these services when needed, even if you don't use the internet frequently now.

How long will it take to get fibre installed?

The installation time can vary depending on your location, but the process is generally quick and easy. Most installations take just a few hours. Your provider will help schedule a time that’s convenient for you, and the team will walk you through everything.

Do I need to be home for the installation?

Yes, you’ll need to be home during the installation to ensure everything is set up correctly.

What equipment will I need for fibre?

For most homes, you’ll need a fibre router and a fibre network device . Your service provider will supply the necessary equipment.

Do I need to upgrade my devices for fibre?

Generally, most devices will work well with fibre. However, it’s a good idea to check that your devices (such as computers, phones, and smart TVs) support faster speeds. If your devices are older, you might want to consider upgrading to fully take advantage of the fibre speeds.

What should I do if I have trouble with my fibre connection?

If you ever experience issues with your fibre service, simply contact your service provider's customer support team. They’ll be able to troubleshoot any problems, guide you through the steps to fix them, and ensure everything is working as it should.

I only use a landline for calls. Do I still need to switch to fibre?

Yes, even if you only use a landline for calls, you’ll need to switch to a fibre-based voice service. But don't worry – you’ll still be able to keep your landline number.

How will the copper switch-off affect my business?

If you run a business, it’s important to switch to fibre to keep your services running smoothly. Fibre offers faster, more reliable internet, which is crucial for day-to-day operations. Contact your service provider to discuss the best fibre plans for your business and ensure a smooth transition.

What happens if I miss the deadline for my zone’s switch-off?

If you miss the deadline for your area’s copper switch-off, your copper-based services will cease. However, you can be reconnected to fibre at a later date. We recommend acting sooner rather than later to avoid any service interruptions, but rest assured that your service provider will help you make the switch as soon as possible.

Ready to Make the Switch?
