Manx Telecom Sets 2029 Deadline for Copper Network Switch-Off as Fibre Takes Over

Manx Telecom has announced that it will begin shutting down the copper telecom network in 2025, with the full switch-off completed no later than 2029. This is a key step in moving the Isle of Man to full-fibre broadband as part of a £50 million investment in new fibre optic infrastructure, one of the largest infrastructure projects and private investments in the island’s history.

The rollout of fibre-optic broadband is already well underway, with over 90% of homes and businesses now able to access faster internet. More than half of the island’s population is already enjoying faster, more reliable internet through fibre services. This number will continue to grow as the transition continues, helping the Isle of Man fully embrace its digital future.

Hugo van Zyl, Chief Technical Officer of Manx Telecom, commented:

“The copper network switch-off is an essential step towards modernising the Isle of Man's telecommunications infrastructure. Fibre broadband offers a more reliable, faster, and future-proof service for the island. Our goal is to ensure every home and business using fixed line communication services takes full advantage of this improved technology by 2029, ensuring the Isle of Man is ready for the digital future."

Manx Telecom has been working closely with Isle of Man Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority (CURA), the Department for Enterprise (DfE), and local service providers to ensure a smooth and efficient transition for the community. The project represents one of the largest and most significant infrastructure overhauls in the island's history, preparing it for the digital challenges and opportunities of the coming decades.

A spokesperson from CURA, said;

“Retiring the copper telecoms network on the Island is an important step in developing our Critical National Infrastructure, and safeguarding consumer interests should be at the forefront of our minds during this journey; especially ensuring the vulnerable members of our community are informed and protected.”

As the copper network is switched off in phases on a region-by-region basis, residents and businesses will be notified well in advance. Comprehensive information will be provided, ensuring a seamless transition to fibre broadband.

For residents who haven’t yet switched to fibre, Manx Telecom Networks has developed a simple "traffic light" system to guide them:

  • Green Properties: Fibre is available already; you can place an order with your provider now.
  • Amber Properties: Fibre is available, but additional installation steps may be required. Manx Telecom and service providers will assist in facilitating the process.
  • Red Properties: Fibre is not yet available, but network expansion is underway. Manx Telecom will provide updates on progress and availability.

Islanders are encouraged to visit mt.im/network to check their property’s status and learn more about the switch to fibre. Although the decommissioning of copper will happen gradually, households and businesses are encouraged to act now to avoid future disruption.
