International Women's Day 2024: Celebrating Women in Tech with Louisa Teece

As part of Manx Telecom Group's Women in Tech series, we spoke to Louisa Teece, a Database Administrator for Manx Telecom Group with seven years of experience in the IT industry.

Louisa loves the problem-solving aspect of her role, picking apart a problem and working out how to solve it with the tools she has available. She finds it rewarding to take a particularly challenging issue and meticulously comb through it until she completely understands it. 

When asked about her proudest accomplishment in her current role, Louisa mentioned documentation. She thoroughly documented various parts of her responsibilities and recorded existing and new functionality within the Data Management team. She strongly believes in the importance of documentation and always says, "Write the documentation you would like to read!"

Louisa believes it is important for more women to take roles in the tech/telecommunications industry. It is an ever-evolving industry, and there is a high demand for individuals who enjoy learning new skills. IT is always changing, with new technologies developing constantly. As there are many skills that can be learned using online learning tools, it’s not always necessary to need a university education to have a successful career.

In Louisa's opinion, the most significant challenge women encounter in the tech field today is the fact that IT has, in the past, been a male-dominated industry. However, IT employers often offer hybrid office/work-from-home conditions and flexitime, which is great if you're trying to build a career around a busy family life with children, like herself.

When asked what message she would like to give young women thinking about a career in Tech, Louisa said, "Tech is an excellent industry to consider, especially if you enjoy learning and building new skills. There are always new technologies being created and the excitement of 'The New'. With the advent of 5G, AI and the ever-more connected world, the scope for interesting careers and challenges is wide open. Especially for women.”
