International Women's Day 2024: Celebrating Women in Tech with Sarah Icely

As we celebrate International Women's Day 2024, we’ve spoken with colleagues from across the business, and today, we're shining a spotlight on Sarah Icely, a Connectivity Resource Control professional at Manx Telecom.

When asked about her favourite aspect of her job, Sarah replied, "The challenge and broad scope of work that gives me the opportunity every day to use my organisational & prioritising skills, which is very important in our team as sometimes things need to be re-arranged at short notice due to resource becoming available or priority work requests coming through. In this line of work, we have a lot of pressure to deal with, but we have a fantastic team and wider group around us that helps us keep the work atmosphere enjoyable and engaging."

Sarah is most proud of her customer-focused approach to her job. She believes in keeping customers connected and providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers. Additionally, she's proud of how much of a people person she has become and her ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of colleagues and customers.

When asked about the importance of having more women in the tech/telecommunications industry, Sarah emphasised that careers in the tech industry are not all about systems and IT, and often, the core skills needed to succeed in the industry are people skills. She believes more women should take on roles in the tech industry to keep a healthy mix of individuals in the workplace.

Despite the significant strides made towards gender equality in recent years, Sarah believes that the most considerable challenge women encounter in the tech field today is the perception that only men can do tech field jobs. However, she firmly believes that gender doesn't matter if you have the proper skill set and are the right person for the job.

Finally, when asked what message she would give young women thinking about a career in tech, Sarah said, "Women bring unique skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities to the tech field industry. Do it! Promote your personality and willingness to learn."
